Coding for Social Determinants of Health: An Introduction
Lunchtime session Dec 2
Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA
Payers are beginning to acknowledge that regardless of proper medical attention and prescribed treatment, circumstances in a patient’s life outside the control of the physician and the patient heavily influence a patient’s health and well-being.
Codes to indicate these harmful situations, whether environmental or economical or otherwise, allow for reporting of treatment failures, unexpected negative outcomes, and generally increased risk in patients who may have socioeconomic reasons for less than expected positive outcomes and higher cost.
Due to the brief time scheduled for these sessions, please try to log in on time. We will start promptly at 12:15.
Attention will be given to:
- Introduction and overview of social determinants
- Attention to codes currently available for reporting
- Some introductory level discussion of stepwise implementation of documentation and workflow
