Coding for Social Determinants of Health:
Good for patient care, quality measure outcomes, and E&M levels
Lunchtime session April 5
Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA
Payers are beginning to acknowledge that regardless of proper medical attention and prescribed treatment, circumstances in a patient’s life outside the control of the physician and the patient heavily influence a patient’s health and well-being. And evaluating your patient for these issues can affect E&M level selection.
Codes to indicate these harmful situations, whether environmental or economic or otherwise, allow for reporting of treatment failures, unexpected negative outcomes, and generally increased risk in patients who may have socioeconomic reasons for less than expected positive outcomes and higher cost.
Due to the brief time scheduled for these sessions, please try to log in on time. We will start promptly at 12:15.
Attention will be given to:
- Introduction and overview of social determinants
- Attention to codes currently available for reporting
- Influence on E&M level selection
