Coding the Endocrine System Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA

Coding the Endocrine System

Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA

The Endocrine system can be called the regulator due to its principal responsibility of providing a stable balance between interdependent elements of the human body through various hormones, thus making endocrine coding a necessary part of many specialties.

The ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 training session will include:

  • Chapter specific terminology with anatomy
  • Proper coding of conditions, disorders, and their complications
  • Review coding sequencing, rules, regulations and conventions
  • Stressing the importance of specificity in documentation and coding with identification

of co-morbidities that trigger HCCs (Hierarchical Condition Categories)

Please have your ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 manuals available for coding exercises.

You may submit your specific coding problems and questions to Donna Pendergrass at least a week ahead to be addressed by Karen during class. Please de-identify/remove any patient protected health information if you send clinic notes.

2024 Coding for Social Determinants of Health: Good for patient care, quality measure outcomes, and E&M levels Three Hour Session Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA and Donna Pendergrass, MD CPPM CPCO CDEO

2024 Coding for Social Determinants of Health:
Good for patient care, quality measure outcomes, and E&M levels

Three Hour Session

Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA
and Donna Pendergrass, MD CPPM CPCO CDEO

Expanded resources.

The final rule for the 2024 CMS Fee Schedule introduced new codes added to reimburse for screening as well as for coordination of services to address the Social Determinants of Health.

Commercial payers are also beginning to acknowledge that regardless of proper medical attention and prescribed treatment, circumstances in a patient’s life outside the control of the physician and the patient heavily influence a patient’s health and well-being. And evaluating your patient for these issues can affect E&M level selection.

Codes to indicate these harmful situations, whether environmental or economic or otherwise, allow for reporting of treatment failures, unexpected negative outcomes, and generally increased risk in patients who may have socioeconomic reasons for less than expected positive outcomes and higher cost.

Attention will be given to:

  • Introduction and overview of social determinants
  • Attention to codes currently available for reporting
  • Influence on E&M level selection
  • Available Screens and billing/revenue
  • Local Resources for patient assistance
