NCCI edits help prevent inappropriate payments when two procedures occur/are billed together. Appropriate use of modifiers can affect/be affected by NCCI edits, sometimes causing confusion, denials, and coding compliance issues.

HEDIS® measures, used to drive improvement efforts surrounding best practices, are often of no benefit or even a detriment to the quality of life for older adults with limited life expectancy or disabilities that interfere with measure compliance.

Hospice patients are automatically excluded, but other frail patients with advanced illness can only be excluded at this time by coding and billing specific diagnostic codes within specified parameters.
