CODING EXTERNAL CAUSES: INJURIES, ADVERSE EFFECTS, POISONINGS, & OTHERCODING EXTERNAL CAUSES: INJURIES, ADVERSE EFFECTS, POISONINGS, & OTHER CONSEQUENCES IN 2026 Presented by: Karen Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, FAHIMA This important and often overlooked area of coding will be addressed through chapter specific coding conventions and sequencing guidelines and rules relating to injuries, poisonings and other external causes. Additional emphasis on coding the highest level of specificity will be covered to aid in reporting medical necessity. A few areas covered include coding: • Contusions, open wounds, lacerations • Traumatic injuries including burns • Insect bites, abrasions, foreign bodies, superficial injuries • Poisonings and toxic effects of substances • Procedural complications Please bring your ICD-10-CM manual to class for participation in the exercises. New and existing CPT4 and ICD-10 coding processes, sequencing guidelines, rules, and regulations as well as coding conventions and interpretations affecting appropriate diagnostic code assignment will be discussed. If there are applicable topics or questions that you wish to be addressed, please forward those at least a week prior to the session to make sure they are covered.
